Valentine’s Day 2024 Date and History:

There are a number of different origin stories for Valentine’s Day, but the most widely accepted one dates back to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which took place in mid-February and marked the beginning of spring. The festival involved women and men being matched through a lottery, and it was replaced by St. Valentine’s Day, which was observed as a romantic holiday for a considerable amount of time beginning in the 14th century by Pope Gelasius I.

According to another legend, St. Valentine was put to death on February 14 for arranging covert marriages, which prevented the husbands from going to war because the Roman emperor Claudius II had outlawed them. In Roman mythology, Cupid, the angel of love, is the son of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love, and his bow and arrow symbolize the spell of love being cast through a heart. Since Cupid is also a well-known symbol for Valentine’s Day, the celebration of love is centered around the idea of being in love.

Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14?

The 8th-century Gelasian Sacramentary documented the celebration of the Feast of Saint Valentine on February 14. However, it was not until the 14th and 15th centuries that Valentine’s Day became associated with love, as ideas of courtly love blossomed with the association of “lovebirds” of early spring.
